Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that enlarges woman’s breasts. An implant is placed behind the woman’s breast to enhance her natural breast. Some women desire larger breasts. Other women have differences between the right and left side. The goal of the surgery is to accentuate the woman’s natural breasts, creating a more full, confident appearance.

What is a breast implant? A breast implant is a gel sac filled with either silicone or saline. There are several manufacturers in the United States that have been making breast implants for quite a long time. Breast implants can have different textures on the outside. They can be smooth or textured. They come in various shapes and sizes. When you meet with Doctor Orloff you can decide together which implants would best fit your needs.

When deciding on size of breast implants the width of your chest, your body shape, and medical history are important. When you meet with Doctor Orloff you will have a chance to express your desires. Then, together you can look at available sizes and shapes and decide which implants would best fit you. If you are not sure that’s OK. You will have an opportunity to talk about what is important to you and we will help you reach a conclusion.

The breast augmentation procedure is performed in a board certified surgery center while you are comfortably anesthetized. There are several approaches. A very popular approach is through a small incision around the lower areola. A small opening is made and a pocket for the implant is developed under the breast tissue. The implant is placed inside the pocket. The opening is then closed using small sutures. This approach allows the incision to heal so well that in most cases one cannot identify the healed scar. Another way is through an incision on the lower breast or through the armpit. When you meet with Doctor Orloff you can decide together which approach would best suit your body shape.

Sometimes breast implants are used to even out asymmetrical breasts. Most women have differences between the right and left breast. This is actually very common and it is rare to find a woman with identical breasts.

Using slightly different implants can even out these differences and create a more aesthetic appearance. It makes wearing most clothing much easier and eliminates the need for padding the smaller side.

Using breast implants not only enlarges the size, but it provides more fullness in the upper chest and cleavage area. Wearing smaller tops and thin shoulder strapped clothing becomes easier. In many cases the procedure eliminates the need for a bra and the need to hide bra straps. Strapless evening dresses fit much better.

From the profile you can really appreciate more full breast tissue above the areola, the colored part of the breast. When someone has small or droopy breasts that area appears flat. The implant fills it up and allows for clothing to fit in a more flattering manner.

Many women loose breast tissue with childbearing and breastfeeding. Often with age the breasts become smaller, softer, and more droopy. A breast augmentation can be combined with a breast lift to create a more youthful and uplifted appearance. In this case the excess skin around the areola was removed in addition to adding the breast implant.

The breast augmentation procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. Following the surgery and recovery you can go home to fully recover. Your chest may be sore for several days and you will be prescribed pain medication to make your recovery easier. Soon your implants will settle in their new place and Doctor Orloff will teach you how to move them around to maintain a nice and natural appearance.

Many women become more self-confident and proud of their appearance following breast enhancement. They feel they have achieved better body symmetry with breast augmentation. Breast surgery can be performed alone or in addition to other surgical procedures.
